Michael Phillips
Boys’ Middle School Basketball Coach
Dr. Michael Phillips not only serves as the administrator of Bay City Christian School, but he has also invested much of his ministry in athletics. Over the years, he has coached 16 seasons of volleyball and spent more than two decades on the basketball court. His teams have earned notable success, including one state volleyball championship in Virginia and three consecutive girls’ basketball championships in WACS.
For Dr. Phillips, however, championships are not the ultimate goal. He values the relationships built with his players, whether during “Filly Fun Time” on the court or in conversations beyond school life. Through these interactions, he prays that his influence will help young people grow, not only as athletes, but most importantly as followers of Christ. His desire is that they live out the truth of Colossians 3:23–24: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
A lifelong sports fan, Dr. Phillips cheers for the Milwaukee Bucks and Duke Blue Devils (sorry, Badger fans, about 2015!), but his greatest loyalties lie with the Washington Capitals and the Detroit Tigers.
